'Everybody knows about the hedgehogs on Camborne Close'
Residents of an estate in Northampton have been left horrified over the rise of dead hedgehogs being discovered in their gardens over the past few months. The number of hedgehog deaths, and the timeframe surrounding their demise, has led many in the community to place the blame on the unwanted use of weed killer by the council.
It's no overestimation to say that the residents fell in love with their new neighbours. "We check them and give them a brush with a toothbrush. We feed them at night and leave troughs everywhere so they've got plenty of water," Lynn said.At NorthantsLive we're more than just news. Lynn explained, "The guys [contractors] didn't want to spray, they haven't sprayed in 6 years with weed killer. They were saying they didn't want to spray it but somebody had complained so they had to." "In the period of a week we had seven dead hoggies. There's no sign of any flystrike or any diseases."
The council said: "The use of herbicides is a practice accepted by the council as a method of controlling weed growth... there are millions of obstacles around Northampton and we carry out the herbicide treatment to make areas look neat, tidy and well- maintained.
