The Nottinghamshire council says it 'can't envisage' having to make any cuts to services.
Nottinghamshire County Council's finance chief says the authority is a "very long way" from declaring bankruptcy despite it predicting a budget gap of more than £60 million over the coming years. The latest estimate of the Conservative-led authority's deficit is double the previous forecast, with opposition parties accusing the leadership of having "lost control."
The predicted budget gap of £60.2 million covers the next three financial years, up to and including the one which begins in April 2026. When launching its budget consultation at the end of September, that same prediction stood at just £30.8 million. In terms of why the predicted deficit has shot up, a council report says rising inflation and an increased demand for its adult and children's social care services are among the biggest reasons.
But cabinet member Councillor Jackson argued that moving out of West Bridgford's County Hall and into a new office building based on the Top Wighay development near Hucknall will be beneficial. Councillor Jackson said using the Top Wighay site would "cost a fraction" of what it would to stay at County Hall.
