The child missed out on her penultimate year of secondary school, only attending a specialist school twice a week during the final days of the summer term
A family is to be paid £2,000 by a Northamptonshire council after a child missed out on a "key stage" of her education. A mother complained that West Northamptonshire Council failed to provide her daughter with suitable education at a specialist school, as set out in her Education, Health, and Care Plan .
In late May, the specialist school contacted the council themselves, asking them to bring the child's start date forward. Only then did the council amend the notice and give the pupil an immediate start date of June 2022.The mother complained to the council about her daughter's lost education and WNC agreed that the new school start date of September was an error, and she should have enrolled as early as March 2022.
They also found that the child wasn't able to start full-time in June as the specialist education provision wasn't in place at the new school. She continued at only two days per week during the final weeks of the summer term. A spokesperson for WNC said: "We acknowledge and fully accept the ombudsman’s recommendations. Similar to other local areas in the country, we are continuing to see a rise in the number of children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities who need support.
