Multiple questions were asked about the pier at last week's full council
Sefton’s leadership was grilled over Southport pier at a meeting of the borough’s full council last week – although members were told they couldn’t ask about long-delayed reports into its condition which had been released earlier that day.
The council said it does not have the money to carry out the repairs needed to get it reopened but is in the process of seeking out external sources of funding which could generate the funds needed to carry out the extensive work required.
Among the questions put to and answered by the cabinet member for regeneration and skills, Cllr Marion Atkinson included queries about whether the pier was an “isolated case”, the costs of borrowing for repair work and whether there were any plans to hand over the concessions to the council’s own hospitality company.
A further question, also by Cllr Prendergast, asked whether there had been any “formal or informal discussions/ correspondence with any prospective companies” about works that may be required to repair Southport Port.
