After Marian Wilkinson suffered months of forgetfulness, growing paranoia and falls, a specialist concluded she had dementia. A few months later, her cognitive ability hadn't declined - but actually improved.

Her son, David, 70, suspects specialists at the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust got the diagnosis wrong. And for eight years, Alex Preston, of Anstey, Leics, believed he was one of the 5% of patients who develop the condition under the age of 65. About 120,000 people in the UK are diagnosed every year with dementia – Alzheimer's disease being the most common type
