No. 1 Houston has rarely been challenged on its way to an 18-1 start to the season.

“You don’t sit there and say, ‘Well that’s a team we are going to beat by 30,’” UH coach Kelvin Sampson said. UH has been ahead at halftime in every game this season, averaging a 14-point lead at the break. There have, however, been a few battles with single digit leads over Oregon , Kent State , Alabama , North Carolina A&T , Virginia , UCF , Cincinnati and USF .
In the only loss of the season, the Cougars wasted a 15-point second-half lead in a 71-65 loss to Alabama.“We’ve been in plenty of close games,” Sampson said. “We’re not going to apologize for the games we’ve won because we had to really play well in those games.”
