SINGAPORE - Many Filipinos these days are in tears over onions - not because of the sting - but because of the short supply having pushed prices to an all-time high. At nearly 600 pesos per kilogram, onions now cost nearly three times as much as chicken, which retails at 220 pesos per kilogram.

People will have to deal with the growing pressure of climate change impacts and an ever-shrinking window to keep global warming to no more than 1.5 deg C by cutting emissions to reach net zero by 2050. “Those that are already the most vulnerable are suffering – and in the face of multiple crises, those who qualify as vulnerable are rapidly expanding, in rich and poor countries alike.”Cooperation in a fragmented world is the theme of this year’s annual meeting, which will be held next Monday to Friday.

The report ranked the cost-of-living crisis as the most severe global risk over the next two years, but said this will peak in the short term. However, the prolonged war in Ukraine will mean “stubborn” inflationary pressures for governments and the central bank over the next two years.
