As Italy saw slowdowns in both new confirmed coronavirus cases and coronavirus deaths Monday, Italian officials are cautiously optimistic that the worst of the outbreak may be coming to an end.an increase of 4,789 over the past dayHowever, it also lines up with a decline in the number of tests being carried out, and Silvio Brusaferro, head of Italy’s national health institute, said it was too soon to say if the downward trend would continue.
The numbers come as unions in Lombardy, the region hit hardest by the virus, announced Wednesday strikes, saying the recent government order to shut businesses due to the pandemic“Today is perhaps the first positive day we have had in this hard, very tough month. It is not the time to sing victory, but we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Giulio Gallera, Lombardy’s top health official, whose region was hit hardest by the pandemic.
