Senator Jake Corman drops out of race for governor, endorses Lou BarlettaThe crowded race for the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania’s governor’s race took an 11th-hour turn on Thursday with Jake Corman officially bowing out and throwing his support behind the candidate he believes gives Republicans the best chance to win in November.
This move comes as far-right conservative Doug Mastriano has emerged in poll after poll as the first or second most popular candidate among likely Republican voters who had made up their minds. But Republican insiders fear he stands no chance of beating presumptive Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro in the general election.
White said when he got the call about coalescing around a candidate, he replied the only candidate he was going to coalesce around was himself. Fitzpatrick echoed that sentiment saying the announcement is another example of career politicians putting their interests ahead of Pennsylvanians’ interests.
During the news conference, both men injected some humor in their responses with Corman saying he called Barletta on Wednesday telling him “it was his last chance to get out of the race and support me. But it didn’t quite go that way.” “I think people are now just beginning to really focus on this,” said Corman, who noted his name will still appear on the ballot but urged voters, including his own mother, to check Barletta’s name on their ballot instead of his.
