A growing number of mental-health specialists are questioning the need for mock shooting drills that can traumatize students.
A masked Vermont police office burst into a room full of high schoolers and pretended to open fire, complete with the sounds of gunshots, as part of an active-shooter drill this week that left students terrified, parents furious and experts questioning the value of such exercises.The mock shooting happened Wednesday in Burlington, where high schoolers were learning about how witness statements can be unreliable.
David Rainen, a Massachusetts psychologist who works with children and adolescents, told Newsweek.'When you take something that is as sterile as one of those active shooter drills and that's anxiety provoking and then you turn it up by putting them in a situation like what happened in Vermont, that is quite extreme and triggered response can be significant.'When a situation is perceived as a threat, people immediately go into a 'threat response,' according to Blakeslee.
