After the Record told of an explosion in street sleeping across Scotland, the Manchester Evening News joins the city's Street Engagement Team on one of their regular walkabouts.
A police officer has said he is working "like a social worker now" as he checks in on the homeless in the rain at 4am.
A note is made of his name and date of birth. Then, he is advised to go to the Booth Centre, a homeless support service, when it opens later that morning. There he'll be able to get a warm cup of tea - and more importantly help to get a roof over his head. The officer adds: "The caveat is they have got to engage". But not everyone is willing to engage - or appreciates being woken up in the early hours.

It's not an exact science and it's not an official count, but the numbers gathered on the monthly walkabout help provide a helpful snapshot of the situation. In May, the team counted 19 people sleeping outside. In September it was 43, while on Wednesday morning it was 33. Kevin said: "These are people who have been through the system, who have a right to be here. But because they're not given enough time to find a place to live or a job they end up on the streets. It's really frustrating."
