David Kennedy, the head of the Scottish Police Federation, warned “decimated” officer numbers have left the force increasingly limited in its intelligence gathering and rapid response capability.
Police Scotland no longer has the capacity to keep people safe from terrorists, it has been claimed.
“That is how terror threats are detected and the problem is we are stripping community policing out of Scotland, it is being eradicated, we increasingly have a reactive force only. In the event that an incident does happen that requires a rapid response, again Police Scotland’s ability to do so is being hugely depleted.

In 2007, the Glasgow Airport terror attack saw extremists ram a Jeep Cherokee loaded with propane canisters was driven at the glass doors of the terminal. The car’s driver was severely burnt and five members of the public were injured in the incident which was partly thwarted by police intelligence gathering across the UK.
It emerged earlier this month officers across the northeast have been ordered not to follow up on crimes such as some break-ins and thefts, where there are no leads or CCTV evidence. A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Hard choices are being taken to deliver effective policing within the funding available and action is being taken to achieve savings, with areas which encounter the greatest demand, and which carry the greatest risk in keeping people safe, being prioritised for resources.”
