Katie Hopkins, a controversial figure known for her divisive views, performs stand-up comedy in Battle, East Sussex. Despite being banned from social media platforms, she has a large following and has rebranded as a comedian.
It’s a rainy October night in Battle, East Sussex. In a battered marquee in the middle of a dark field, a hundred people have gathered, water dripping on to their heads and off their jackets as they take their seats for the evening’s entertainment: tonight,is in town, performing her stand-up comedy . The tent is packed, with hippie types, older men, families, but predominantly with white women: the £22 tickets sold out weeks ago.
I’m starting to wonder how I will be received, in this crowd where the far-right meets eco-conscious anti-vaxxers, but within 10 minutes I am dropped off on a dimly lit country road and swiftly stewarded by a man in high-vis. It hasn’t been easy for Hopkins to find venues to host her Infectious tour dates, which began in the summer and are set to continue until next spring. On 7 September, protesters in Stroud disrupted a venue during a show, while two venues in the town declined to host her. “It is no coincidence that our venue was a pub. It turns out speech is the new alcohol in an Age of Prohibition,” she would later post to Instagram.
‘It would be easier to put Katie Hopkins’ admirers in a box. People that are very different from me; easy to understand as the people who don’t make sense’ ; how lockdown was a conspiracy, and the pandemic was a conspiracy. And let’s not forget the Ukraine war conspiracy. Ukraine’s leader Zelensky, alongside veganism and anyone with an electric car, was enemy number one. Then there was the town of Lewes and the liberal elite. Including, probably, myself.
