Construction workers and first responders around North Texas told The Dallas Morning News how they prepare themselves for the summer months.

“There’s a fan that blows air in, but it’s blowing air from the outside temperature, so on top of it being so hot and humid down there, you have nothing but hot air getting thrown back in there,” Reynoso said., according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, before topping out at 100 degrees. For workers like Reynoso, whose jobs require them to be outside, the heat is a constant threat, and knowing how to be safe during extreme heat is a must.

Tello, of Fort Worth, guzzles a combination of water and Gatorade throughout the day, downing one Gatorade for every two 16-ounce bottles of water. Before and after work, he drinks a mixture of sparkling water, salt, lime and Clamato, a tomato juice drink. “It can be dangerous out here,” said Tello, who was repairing broken pavement on a residential street Wednesday on Fort Worth’s near-south side. “It’s hard for us, so we have to be careful.”Jesse Rodriguez, of Dallas Demolition, was at a site on Turtle Creek Boulevard with his brothers-in-law, Travis Alaniz and Jorge Aguilera, who also work for the company.
