The play's impassioned account of a young's man's preventable death and a mother's fight for justice cannot fail to move“I died this morning. In the bath. I’m dead now. Am I dead, Mum?” Thus run the startling opening lines of this impassioned examination of maternal love, familial bonds and egregious NHS failings.
The family bond is delightfully palpable from the start: Connor loves and is loved by his mum, stepfather and four siblings. Sara calls him “matey”, and fondly indulges his adoration of all things bus and lorry-related. Yet when Connor reaches the age of 18 incidents of anger and aggression lead to his transfer to a specialist assessment unit – at which, it transpires, almost no treatment or assessment happens, just the doling out of industrial quantities of sedatives.
It is, of course, impossible not to empathise with Sara’s struggles – while simultaneously acknowledging that the best drama always requires a shade or two of nuance.
