No. 1 draft pick Connor Bedard plays his first NHL regular-season game on opening night in Pittsburgh.
Connor Bedard's arrival means the Blackhawks' 2022-23 tank season wasn’t for naught, that hope is on the horizon. Sure, no fan base feels sorry for a team that won three Stanley Cups in a six-year span that ended less than a decade ago, but it’s been a very disheartening few years for the Blackhawks, on and off the ice. Bedard’s arrival heralds a new era, a new optimism, a new hope.
It’s a sign that the worst is behind them, and that however long this rebuild takes, at least they’re done tearing things down and are now building it back up. As for the city, well, the Cubs collapsed, the White Sox are in disarray, the Bulls are mired in mediocrity and the Bears? Hoo boy, the Bears. The Blackhawks probably won’t be very good this season. But they might be the brightest spot on the Chicago sports landscape — and that’s largely because of Bedard.
