Michael Gove has said the conditions some homeless families are living in in converted office blocks is “deeply concerning”, following an investigation by housing correspondent Victoria_Spratt
: “Everyone deserves a decent place to call home and these reports of low-quality living conditions are deeply concerning.”
“Although extending permitted development rights in this way has enabled us to deliver 94,000 much needed new homes in the past seven years, these homes must be up to scratch. “That is why we have legislated to require that all new homes delivered under such rights must, as a minimum, meet the Nationally Described Space Standards.
“Local authorities have a legal duty to ensure any temporary accommodation provided meet these basic health and safety standards and I encourage any tenant with a similar experience to get in touch with their local council as soon as they can.”Caridon Property, the company which manages Templefields House, said the family in question was referred to them “by a local authority on a temporary accommodation arrangement. At the time, he had two children and was given a two-bedroom apartment.
“The combination of cold, damp weather and families cutting back on energy by reducing their heating consumption and ventilation, is a leading cause of mould,” they added. “We have carried out necessary repairs, and educated the tenant on ventilation and preventative measures, such as placement of furniture.”Experts say these converted offices are putting residents’ health at risk.
