Oil has dropped sharply and copper is down on reports that China wants further talks before signing up to phase one of a trade deal with the U.S.
By David Hodari and Joe Wallace Oct. 14, 2019 7:59 am ET LONDON—Oil and industrial metals prices fell Monday as market players focused on obstacles that could prevent the U.S. and China from completing a future trade pact.
“The market is once again concerned that the hope we had on Friday came too early and that trade tensions are far from resolved,” said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS Wealth Management. “It seems China still has a lot to talk about after this phase one. We’ve seen a big shift down in copper prices this morning,” said Robert Montefusco, a broker at Sucden Financial. “The [WTI] crude market should also be heading back toward $50 and it looks like its more related to the U.S.-China talks than anything else right now.”
