After other states have rescinded mask mandates as the omicron wave of COVID-19 continues to fade, Dallas County Commissioner J.J. Koch wants County Judge...

The order itself is largely symbolic now, as its legitimacy continues to be debated in Texas courts with battling suits between Koch, Jenkins and Gov. Greg Abbott. Jenkins removed any penalties for not following the order several months ago, when it was challenged in court as contradictory to another order by Abbott banning mask mandates.

Koch also criticized Jenkins’ public health advisory committee, a group of medical professionals and hospital directors who give the county judge advice and offer suggestions on policies like the mask requirement. The committee sets the color-coded threat level for the county, another symbolic guidance measure that offers advice on how Dallas County residents should react to case counts and community spread.Dallas County’s public health director, Philip Huang, said Tuesday that community spread is still too high to drop the threat level to orange, but that the committee would meet later this week to determine if a change is necessary.

Koch, however, said that committee should be more transparent and should not be in charge of making public health decisions for the county. “We’ve got this body that meets in secret,” Koch said. “I don’t question their competency, I question their transparency.”. He’s been steadfast on an aggressive approach to public health measures, including a stay-at-home order early in the pandemic and on-again, off-again mask mandates in the years since.“It’s a scientific body, not a political body,” Jenkins said. “I choose not to use politics and sticking my thumb in the air to see which way the wind blows.

Why an Arizona County Turned Down $1.9 Million in COVID ReliefWhy an Arizona County Turned Down $1.9 Million in COVID ReliefThe $1.9 million in pandemic aid would have gone a long way in Cochise County, a rural borderland where a winter of infections swamped hospitals.
