Commentary: Minutes matter for rural Medicare patients
Rural Texans must drive miles to the nearest emergency room. The 1135 waiver allows Medicare patients to seek care at a freestanding emergency room. A La Vernia resident urges Congress to make it permanent.Health experts say minutes matter in an emergency, but not everyone has access to medical care at a moment’s notice. Individuals who live in rural parts of the state must drive miles to the nearest emergency room. The time it takes to find care can mean the difference between life and death.
Unlike people in most rural parts of the state, I am lucky enough to live near Emergency Clinic La Vernia, an outstanding free-standing emergency room. It’s the only 24-hour medical facility within 40 miles of our town. Following that first visit, I have been back a handful of times to be treated for bronchitis, a urinary infection and pneumonia. I depend on the facility out of sheer confidence in the staff’s ability to handle any emergency condition. They take great care of me, and the clinic has almost no wait time and an impressive team of doctors and nurses.
Where someone lives shouldn’t be the deciding factor in their medical outcome, but when an emergency strikes, that is likely the case.
