Xander Bogaerts, 30, wanted to show more power. So far, he's hit two homers and two doubles. He brings leadership to new team, too.
Baseball players need a sense of humor, if only not to lose their minds. Xander Bogaerts, being fluent in Dutch, has that base covered.
Though he has the physique of an Old School NFL safety — he’s 6-foot-2, yoked and plays at 220 to 225 pounds — he is not looking to be an enforcer with anyone. He said he’s practiced in baseball diplomacy and comfortable with telling teammates what needs to be said. His game speaks for itself. A ballplayer’s ballplayer, he’s steady, able to counter good pitching, attentive to details and durable. The scouts love him, noticing, for example, that after the 2022 Red Sox had fallen out of playoff contention, Bogaerts would field grounders three hours before games.
Umpires were not kind to him last year. They dealt him more strikes on breaking balls below the knee than all but two other hitters.“Maybe wear low pants,” he said, smiling. He liked his offensive performance last season, he said. “You lose some extra-base hits,” said Bogaerts. “They shifted me a lot. I don’t know why. To the pull side. So, it was back to the middle of the field with my hitting. Which is even better. It helps with your approach.”Whatever tweaks he made after a 2022 season in which he cranked out hits with seeming ease, batting .307 with 38 doubles, Bogaers appears comfortable with his new team.Sunday, in his fourth game as a Padre, he drove his second home run in the 3-1 victory over the Rockies.
