The expiration of the Child Tax Credit means 3.7 million more children in poverty. Is this the America we want?
The Biden administration has been trying to convert the one-year Child Tax Credit into a permanent program, but that goal has been thwarted by Congress — specifically, by Sen. Joe Manchin III .
A failure to reenact the plan’s Child Tax Credit wouldn’t reduce it to zero; it would simply revert to the $2,000 credit per child in place before 2021. Unlike the rescue plan credit, however, the old benefit was not fully refundable. Scott in his agenda groused that half of all American pay no income tax, though he also advocated cutting the IRS budget in half, so it’s unclear how he would enforce the rule.
