Hilary Kearney aims to save as many as 1 million bees this year to help the ecosystem
It normally would never cross my mind to write about World Bee Day. But that was before I talked to Hilary Kearney, a beekeeper from National City.
Did you know that: honeybees fly up to three miles from their hive to collect pollen; prefer blooming trees to garden flowers; dedicate each trip to only one type of bloom and are capable of recognizing patterns and colors. Scientists have taught bees to choose a Picasso artwork from among Monet paintings, Kearney says.AdvertisementShe mentors rookie beekeepers. She removes unwanted beehives from properties of residents in distress.
She changes it up, wearing beekeeper garb created with colorful fabrics and whimsical designs of flowers and bees, just as medical workers have jazzed up their drab hospital scrubs. Comvita set a goal of saving 10 million bees globally this year, double the number it committed to save in 2021 when the campaign originated. It has enlisted Kearney again this year, along with seven other professional beekeepers, to help with its rescue mission.
Kearney is a pro at removing and moving hives. She averages 60 to 90 colony relocations a year but is scheduling 20 more this year for the Comvita rescue project.
