Striker's goal breaks tie in 89th minute. Second-year club gets big plays from Jaedyn Shaw, Kailen Sheridan and Amirah Ali.
When the Wave needed a goal Saturday night in their season opener, guess who scored it?Pinpointing a penalty shot in the 89th minute to break a tie against the Chicago Red Stars, the striker secured the 3-2 victory before 30,854 at Snapdragon Stadium. The lefty’s drive tucked inside the left post, beyond U.S. national team star Alyssa Naeher.
But the flashiest offensive effort Saturday belonged to Shaw, who someday — perhaps this summer — likely will join Morgan on the national team, said Wave coach Casey Stoney. Fans behind the goal cheered her. Sheridan smiled and waved. Later, the stadium video board showed a fan who held up a sign. “Hey Sheridan,” it read, “my wife loves you!”
