“Law-abiding gun owners, we need them to lock up their firearms and keep them separate from ammunition and not in their cars,” Mayor Ginther said. “It's really a message about safe storage.”

The City of Columbus will be passing out gun locks at block parties this summer in an effort to cut down on gun violence. Amid the hamburgers, hot dogs, and kids activities, there’s something else making an appearance at the bi-monthly block parties held by the city of Columbus: gun locks.

The city will be passing out free locks at its Rise Up C’bus events in hopes of helping curb gun violence. Mayor Andrew Ginther decried the efforts of lawmakers in the statehouse, who he says have made it easier to carry a gun in Ohio, with open carry and “stand your ground” laws being passed in recent years.Ginther said the message is not just to the criminal element but to responsible gun owners as well.

“Law-abiding gun owners, we need them to lock up their firearms and keep them separate from ammunition and not in their cars,” he said. “It's really a message about safe storage.”She said there are too many illegal and legal guns on the street. “I just think they should have never made it to where they can carry them openly,” she said. “That was the worst thing they could have done.”JOIN THE CONVERSATION
