Officer Demetris Ortega reportedly was a passenger in a vehicle registered to him that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run Wednesday.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 20-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police has been suspended after he was linked to a fatal hit-and-run Wednesday morning, according to multiple reports.that Ortega was under investigation in the hit-and-run on the city’s Northeast Side which left a woman dead. The identity of the woman has not been released.the car involved in the hit-and-run is registered to Ortega, but the officer was a passenger in the vehicle when the incident occurred at 2:41 a.m.
Police tell WBNS the woman was crossing the street when she was struck. The vehicle then left the area. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dispatch reports that even if Ortega wasn’t driving, he still could be disciplined by the department for not helping the victim and for not following “division directives regarding proper conduct.”
