Minouche Shafik announced her decision in an email to the Columbia community Wednesday, according to the school's student newspaper.
President of Columbia University Minouche Shafik testifies before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing on "Columbia in Crisis: Columbia University 's Response to Antisemitism " on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, April 17, 2024. “I have had the honor and privilege to lead this incredible institution, and I believe that — working together — we have made progress in a number of important areas.
The announcement follows a tumultuous academic year for Shafik. In April, she was grilled by members of the House Education Committee over campus antisemitism, led by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y. "After failing to protect Jewish students and negotiating with pro-Hamas terrorists, this forced resignation is long overdue," the congresswoman said. "We will continue to demand moral clarity, condemnation of antisemitism, protection of Jewish students and faculty, and stronger leadership from American higher education institutions."
