The golf world is remembering Tom Weiskopf, noted for his British Open triumph and numerous contests with Jack Nicklaus during a career with 16 PGA Tour victories.

Tom Weiskopf, fearless in style of play, fashion sense and opinions, has passed away at the age of 79 accordingHis passing was confirmed to the Associated Press by his wife, Laurie. Weiskopf died on Saturday at their home in Big Sky, Montana.

Weiskopf did get the better of Nicklaus by one shot or in a playoff three times, at the Canadian Open, Doral Open and the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Open. He also beat Nicklaus by one shot to win the U.S. Senior Open in 1995.“Jack knew he was going to beat you. You knew Jack was going to beat you. And Jack knew you knew he was going to beat you," Weiskopf once said.

He also attributed his failings to alcoholism. Weiskopf stopped drinking in 2007 and later told people it was one of his greatest victories. “I challenge myself all the time: Why couldn’t I have done that? Why couldn’t I have worked out? Why did I drink?" he said in the golfweek.com interview."Well, I’m 20 years sober. It’s my greatest accomplishment. Because I was a partier, a good time guy. I had so much talent that I could turn it on at times when I wanted to, when I needed to, but it wasn’t important to me,” he said.
