At least one first responder and six civilians were injured, according to the AP.“This is the kind of fire we can’t fight head on. We actually had deputy sheriffs and firefighters in areas that had to pull out because they just got overrun," Pelle said.
"I'd like to emphasize that due to the magnitude of this fire, the intensity of this fire and its presence in such a heavily populated area, we would not be surprised if there are injuries or fatalities."Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of emergency, which opens access to potential disaster relief funds. The National Guard was activated.The Marshall Fire was one of several being driven by exceptionally dry conditions and wind gusts in excess of 100 mph.
Fire crews said Thursday they didn't think they'd be able to begin to contain the blaze until winds died down. Pelle said officers and firefighters had to evacuate themselves after being overrun by the flames. "This is the kind of fire you can't fight off," Polis said. "This fire is not so much a question of resources ... This fire is frankly a force of nature."
