The Colorado School of Mines football program has its eyes on a national title.
That was certainly the case Saturday at ThunderBowl in Pueblo, where the second-ranked Orediggers routed the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves, 55-14, behind 563 yards of offense in an RMAC victory.
Mines senior quarter John Matocha completed 27 of 35 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns, while three different runners found the end zone. That included a 67-yard run from Landon Walker that gave the Orediggers a 31-7 lead less than 90 seconds into the second half. Steven Croell answered with a 38-yard scoring run for CSU Pueblo , but that was the last time the ThunderWolves got on the scoreboard.
Max McLeod and Flynn Schiele both topped 100 yards receiving for Mines, with the former hauling in one touchdown grab and the latter two. The Orediggers defense sacked CSU Pueblo quarterback Chance Fuller three times, and totaled seven tackles for loss in the win. ThunderWolves back Howard Russell led all rushers with 137 yards on nine carries.
