“He was checked against U.S. government databases multiple times prior to entering the country, and the U.S. government did not have any derogatory information about the individual in our systems at the time of entry,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during the daily briefing. Akram arrived in the United States on Dec. 29 on a flight to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to U.S. authorities.
Friends and relatives say he suffered from mental illness and had been getting worse. Some expressed surprise he’d been allowed to travel to the United States, according to British news outlets.
