The Banshees of Inisherin: Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson shine in a violent anti-buddy comedy
Why do wars start? Why do old friends fall out? Irish writer-director Martin McDonagh’s new tragicomedy can’t answer either question but it makes a very bold try. Brilliantly performed by Irish cinema’s favourite odd couple Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson , this is a funny but searching drama, as dark and absurd as any Samuel Beckett play.
Padraic is bewildered and crestfallen at this rejection which, at first, he refuses to accept. It means he has no one to sup pints with in the pub and no-one to listen to his blethering about his livestock. Farrell captures brilliantly his character’s confusion and despair.
