'Mr. Childress was an experienced boat handler and fisherman who obviously was unable to find safe harbor during yesterday's storm,' said Sheriff Brian Hawthorne.
ANAHUAC, Texas -- The Coast Guard ended the search for the missing 88-year-old boater, W. F. Childress, after his body was found at the end of Texas City Dike Tuesday afternoon.
At about 3 p.m., Childress' body was found with a life vest with no other signs of trauma. Authorities say his driver's license was on his person which matched the identity of the same man reported missing earlier Tuesday morning. "Mr. Childress was an experienced boat handler and fisherman who obviously was unable to find safe harbor during yesterdays storm. Prayers to him, his family, and friends for this tragic loss, may he Rest In Peace," said Sheriff Brian Hawthorne.According to the Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston release, Childress didn't return home after leaving to fish on Monday.He was believed to be fishing in the Galveston Bay in a 16-foot green aluminum boat with a Bimini top.
In an update on Tuesday afternoon, officials said the man's boat was found capsized about half a mile southeast of Smith Point. Crews were still searching for the man.
