A former coal-fired power plant in New Jersey was imploded Friday. Its owners announced plans for a new $1 billion venture on the site, where batteries will be deployed to store power from clean energy sources including wind and solar.

The plant, on the banks of the Delaware River in the Philadelphia suburbs of southern New Jersey, began operating in 1994. A series of loud blasts rang out, and concussive waves of pressure radiated from the site as the structures began to crumble into a heap of smoke and dust.“I worked at a coal plant in India; there were no scrubbers,” he said, referring to emissions-control equipment. “You went in with a white shirt and came out with a black shirt.”
