BREAKING Co-leader in plot to kidnap Michigan governor sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison
Croft, a 47-year-old from Bear, Delaware, was sentenced to 19 years and six months just one day after his ally, 39-year-old Adam Fox, was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended they both receive a life sentence for their plan to kidnap Whitmer and spark a"reign of terror" in 2020 ahead of the presidential election.
Ultimately, Whitmer was not harmed due to secretly embedded FBI informants who quashed the 14-member group's plans in October of that year when the men were arrested."The abduction of the governor was only meant to be the beginning of Croft’s reign of terror," Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler said in court filings."He called for riots, ‘torching’ government officials in their sleep and setting off a ‘domino’ effect of violence across the country.
Croft's legal counsel attempted to detract from prosecutors' belief that he was leading the charge of the kidnapping plot. For example, his attorney Joshua Blanchard noted Croft was smoking two ounces of marijuana per week at the time. Three men were recently given sentences ranging from seven to 12 years for assisting Fox earlier in the summer of 2020. Five additional men are awaiting trial in Antrim County.
