Its latest Carbon Metric Report found textiles were just 4 per cent of what was binned in 2021 in terms of weight, but accounted for 32 per cent of carbon emissions
Clothing is now Scotland’s number one earth-killer - contributing a third of the carbon footprint from households, a shock study has found. Textiles like clothes and shoes are the country’s most environmentally-damaging type of household waste - even worse than plastic - according to Zero Waste Scotland findings.
The huge difference between the two figures for clothing is because it typically has a long supply chain which generates large volumes of emissions at every stage - from growing fibres like cotton, to manufacturing, packaging and transport. Chief executive Iain Gulland said: “The average Scot consumes more than twice the sustainable amount of materials per year, and our throwaway culture encourages that approach. It’s an environmental imperative that we turn this around, and The Rebel Bear’s artworks confront that reality in a really stark, and visually engaging, way.
The Rebel Bear’s artworks include a reworked version of Hokusai's famous The Great Wave off Kanagawa as a tsunami of wasted clothes, painted on a hoarding at the former Debenhams store at Glasgow's St Enoch Centre. In Dundee, another hoarding beside Slessor Gardens shows a new version of Edvard Munch's The Scream with the well-known figure surrounded by piles of new clothing.
