The Division of Emergency Medical Service is down eight dispatchers and 50 paramedics. The department currently has 165 paramedics and 29 emergency medical technicians.
The city’s public safety director, Karrie Howard, said attracting people to work in the positions is difficult. Emergency service employees are paid less than police officers and firefighters. Paramedics in Cleveland start off about $20 to $23 per hour compared to the $30 to $33 per hour in other municipalities and at private ambulance companies.
During training, emergency medical technicians in Cleveland make about $15 an hour. After that, wages are boosted to a little over $19 an hour, according to records. Other comparable cities, such as Pittsburgh, start EMS workers at a little more than $23 an hour, and their pay can grow to $35 an hour.
For critical life-threatening emergencies, the department’s goal is to arrive at the destination in under nine minutes. The fire department will usually respond, as well.
