The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals lead Northeast Ohio hospital systems for patient safety with the only area hospitals receiving the top A grades, according to the Leapfrog Group’s spring 2023 Safety Grades Rankings released Wednesday.

Yet across the nation’s hospital system, the COVID-19 pandemic worsened patient safety, the report said.

Leapfrog’s hospital safety grades have serious implications for patients, Stewart said. Accidents, errors and hospital-acquired infections can lead to longer hospital stays, complications and death, she said. The Clinic estimates that it saved an additional 500 lives in 2022 by using “sepsis teams” to quickly detect and treat sepsis.can become a life-threatening medical emergency when an infection leads to tissue damage and organ failure.

MetroHealth’s new CEO Airica Steed’s goal is to eliminate patient harm and improve the health system’s Leapfrog grade to an A.
