Clinic patients, health experts and patient advocates offered differing views this past week of the change in policy, which appears to be rare or at the forefront of new billing policies among Ohio hospital systems.
a network of 12 hospitals based in Columbus, does not charge patients or their insurance for electronic messages between patients and providers.
More people discovered telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, and liked it, Null said. Now they would prefer to have an online chat with a doctor than go into an office. “I’m asking a question related to my health or a medication and the doctor is answering me; it seems to me totally legitimate to bill,” Fish said. “It’s actually saving money because I don’t have to make an appointment and go in and discuss this certain thing with the doctor.”Those who support the Clinic’s move to bill for some MyChart messages said it wasn’t realistic to expect healthcare workers to answer complicated questions for free.
“It is egregious that hospitals bill patients for asking simple questions about their care via electronic message, without having provided any prices upfront,” Fisher said. “Billing them for electronic messages to their providers is just the latest attempt to wring even more blood from the stone.” Surprise billing laws do not apply to these services, the Clinic said. They apply to emergency services and certain other inpatient care.
