The manager and his playmaker are strange bedfellows but Clement is switched on enough to know what he can do on the pitch.
From the outside, it is beginning to look like there could be a potential personality clash between Philippe Clement and Todd Cantwell. And, to tell you the truth, there’s something about it that makes me chuckle to myself.
Sometimes he might have a bit too much to say for himself and he certainly seems to enjoy the limelight which comes with wearing a Rangers shirt. But Cantwell is a player alright which is why I’m fascinated by the dynamics of his relationship with the new man. Clement might just be the perfect manager for him at the perfect time in his Rangers career because this is a guy who will accept nothing less than 100 per cent from everyone inside his dressing room. That’s already been made crystal clear. It’s not just about Todd Cantwell. It’s about doing what is best for the team, no matter if that means taking off the best player, the highest paid player, the fans’ favourite or the captain. If it needs to be done, Clement won’t hesitate.
The bottom line is, Clement got it right. And, even though it’s still very early days, he appears to be making quite a habit of it. Well, it’s mission accomplished on that front which is quite an achievement in such a short space of time. I then saw his players come flying out of the tunnel and perform very impressively for the first 45 minutes. The second half wasn’t up to the same standard but, with a 2-0 lead at half time, it was enough to get the points in the bag. But what I really enjoyed was listening to Clement speak after the final whistle.
They looked organised like a very well drilled unit, with people filling in for one another, as if they completely understand what’s being asked of them. It looks to me as if the manager has simplified everything for them by going back to basics.
