Clear skies are expected above Anchorage for at least the first half of Monday night, leading to ideal conditions for viewing the northern lights.

Forecasts

for Monday also predict high auroral activity. National Weather Service meteorologist Adisen Fenrich said skies are expected to be clear until midnight. Another round of snow is forecast to move into the region Tuesday morning, however. Anchorage is not predicted to see a significant snow accumulation — Fenrich said less than 5 inches is expected to fall throughout town, although higher totals are possible on the Hillside.

The worst conditions are expected in Portage Valley, eastern Turnagain Arm and Whittier, according to aissued by the weather service. The snow is expected to begin Tuesday morning and between 10 and 18 inches of snow is forecast to fall by Wednesday. Eastern winds up to 35 mph are forecast to hit the area, which could create whiteout conditions and make driving dangerous.

The western Kenai Peninsula will see between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with northern winds gusting up to 30 mph, according to a separate
