He credits a former boss there for giving him a talk that probably set him on his current path. He was actually on his way out the door to take a position at a non-profit when one of the partners told him he’d be wise to re-evaluate the decision in a year or two.It turned out to be true; he returned to KPMG almost exactly two years later and rose to a management position that set him up for the future.
It’s only been about five years since he first joined the company as a controller overseeing NorQuin’s finances. The business has roughly tripled in size over that time. He just recently completed a deal with a larger plant protein firm that’ll see NorQuin’s processing facilities and plant breeding program expand from quinoa into other crops like oats, chickpeas and lentils.
With senior management located in the U.S., Hounjet soon found himself acting as their eyes and ears in Saskatchewan. By 2018, he had made “a natural transition” from controller to chief financial officer. In 2021, the investors were looking to move on to other projects, and the board asked Hounjet to become CEO, with his first task being to find a buyer.
Hounjet is hopeful that his family is through the worst now that the sale is done and his wife’s last radiation treatment is in the books, with a good prognosis from her doctors.“We believe in what we’re doing,” he says. “We’re not just selling widgets. We’re revolutionizing the way we feed the world, through plant-based sustainable products.
