An annual civic reception for Lanarkshire couples marking their golden wedding anniversaries has been abolished.
The event, which was created in 1997 to mark the Queen’s golden anniversary and has been alternately hosted by North and South Lanarkshire Councils since 1998, has been discontinued due to budgetary pressures.
Attendance has fallen from 170 couples at the first event to 90 couples in 2022, usually at a cost of around £10,000 although last year’s, in South Lanarkshire, was £6,000 due to the use of gifts from stock. NLC’s civic functions budget has dwindled in recent years with the Golden Weddings event costing around one quarter of the total funding available.
officers recommended ceasing the event in order to release additional funds and increase opportunities for civic recognition for other individuals, organisations and charities, and this was unanimously agreed by councillors at a recent meeting.
