Be careful little ears what you hear: Reflecting on the Bible Belt’s beliefs about women paid civicnation

So while some say life would be easier if it came with an instruction manual, I beg to differ. Growing up, I was taught that I could be anything, but, because of my gender, “anything” came with terms and conditions. I could be an astronaut, but I would also be expected to have dinner ready for my family after a long day at NASA. I could be strong, but teachers would scold the girls when we tried to hold the door for one another—that was a boy’s job.

It wasn’t until I attended Duke University’s writing camp the summer before my junior year of high school that I heard the real f-word. The one that makes traditionalists tremble. I accidentally signed up for a women’s writing class, believing it would help me learn how to better develop female characters in my work.

The culture I was raised in is detrimental to all genders because of the harmful standards to which we were held. While I cannot speak for how men feel about the pressures they face, I can speak for myself. I grew up suffocating within the confines of an intolerant society and feeling ugly unless someone else thought otherwise. I never felt that I was good enough and that the only way I could find true value and purpose within myself was to be something for someone else.
