City Heights mourns loss of 'community grandmother'; city officials to host safe walks for the elderly [Breaking]
At the Central Avenue Mini Park in City Heights on Friday, a glowing path of candles marked the last steps 66-year-old Chi Cao took the day she was fatally stabbed.
Her alleged assailant, Siliveinusi Hamala, 23, appeared in court this week, but did not enter a plea. Instead the criminal proceedings were delayed because his attorney called into question his client’s mental competency — his ability to understand the proceedings and assist in his defense. “This is not the first time an elderly lady, especially of Asian-descent, gets attacked,” said Yen Aung after the vigil. “My grandmother loves walking outside at night or in the morning. And I feel like I shouldn’t be worried about my grandma… but this does affect me.”
“When something happens to someone in your community, you wonder why and if someone you love will be next,” Elo-Rivera said. “I want you to know that we recognize that, and, as it’s been said, everybody has a right to feel safe.
