Citigroup encourages U.S. staff to take Friday off to commemorate slavery's end

Citigroup is encouraging its US-based employees to take a day off on Friday 19 June to commemorate the end of slavery in the country, as large financial services organisations take a harder look at racial diversity in light of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“For those of you who plan to work on Friday, I strongly encourage you to take some time that day to help advance the commitments we laid out during our discussion so we drive to real sustainable change,” said Mike Corbat, chief executive of Citigroup, in a broader memo to staff addressing racial diversity.

As part of the changes unveiled in the memo, Citi will also donate $10m to organisations fighting racial inequality and will match every $1 raised by employees with $4 for similar causes, up to $2m. Senior financial services executives including Goldman Sachs chief executive, David Solomon, and JPMorgan boss Jamie Dimon have come out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has swept across the world in the wake of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police officers earlier in May.
