Environmentalists and bird experts say a new land acquired in a swap is inferior habitat for the warbler — a songbird that breeds only in Central Texas.

“Good golden-cheeked warbler habitat is mature old growth mixed with ash, juniper and oak woodlands that has at least 70 percent canopy cover,” said Britt Coleman, the president of the Bexar Audubon Society. “What you got in that 144 acres is scrub oak with about 20 percent canopy coverage, which is not sufficient to sustain the warblers.”
“We started pursuing the swap probably three years ago, and that started with a consultation with our environmental scientists and surveys of both areas,” Brian said. “We ultimately wanted two things: We wanted a contiguous development area, but we also wanted better overall habitat for the warbler.”Dawn Selby, Gina Smith, and Nicole Selby get ready to pass out flyers in the Cibolo Canyon area where a development is planned on land set aside for habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
The bird’s protected status has shaped encroaching development for years in Hill Country. Often, in order to build on protected habitat, developers must set aside land for the warbler — with one example being at Cibolo Canyons when the original developer, Lumbermen’s Investment Corp., built on warbler habitat with permission from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife in 2005 and set aside 768 acres in a conservation easement.
