The estimated price tag for a purchase and renovation is $13 million. Chula Vista intends to use federal stimulus and, if approved, state Project Homekey dollars to fund it.
Two months after opening its first bridge shelter, Chula Vista is pursuing transforming a 31-room motel into housing and safe parking for the homeless.
The motel is on Walnut Avenue, just east of Interstate 5 near Palomar Street and Industrial Boulevard, and is surrounded by a mix of commercial and residential units. According to county records, the property consists of two parcels valued at $2.1 million. So far, the city has started an environmental analysis of the site and an initial appraisal on the property, though they declined to share an exact figure “due to ongoing negotiations,” spokesperson Diane Howell said.
The financing plan includes a $65,996 down payment for the purchase, using its remaining allocation of the federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
