The Warriors faced Chris Paul with the Clippers and Rockets in NBA playoff battles.
In Paul’s third year with the LA, the Clippers won the Pacific Division and met the Warriors for a classic first-round series. Against the backdrop of the Donald Sterling scandal and ouster, the Clippers prevailed in a seven-game series, with four games decided by five points or less.
Paul opened the series with a 28-point, eight-assist, seven-rebound game, hitting five 3-pointers in a four-point home loss. In Game 7, Curry poured in 33 points and added nine assists, but Paul got the last laugh, scoring 22 points with 14 assists as the Clippers clinched.Late in the regular season before the Warriors’ first title run, Golden State faced off with Paul’s Clippers in a rematch from the prior year’s playoff battle.
With about 2:30 left in the second quarter, Curry drove down the right side in transition, got past Paul and DeAndre Jordan, then looped around toward the left corner. He hit Paul with consecutive behind-the-back dribbles, faking back toward the basket before falling away for a jumper. Paul fell back, barely catching himself with his left hand, before Curry sunk the shot.
“He got me,” Paul said on a 2020 Instagram Live with Curry, adding that he caught jokes from his own son and Kevin Hart. “It made it so much worse, even, with me, too, because first of all, you hit the shot. But then, K Hart — Kev just be doing the most. He had all the jokes.”The Warriors’ greatest near-miss of the Kevin Durant era was against the Rockets in the 2018 West finals.
