★★★★ ChrisGPackham's Inside Our Autistic Minds is a profound and unique film project 🖋️ emilyrbakes

in 2015. After revealing it to the world, he was flooded with messages from fellow autistic people. Some were joyful and celebratory, others were despairing, some even suicidal, sharing the difficulties a life with autism can bring. Not one to sit back and watch terrible things play out, Packham wanted to intervene.

When she wasn’t masking, Flo would rock back and forth or raise her hands to her head. She’d also sit in long periods of silence, mostly unresponsive to the environment around her. Flo had only ever let down her mask in front of her husband, and was exhausted. She’d decided it was time to share her real self with her mother.

Packham also spent time with Murray, a teenager who does not speak. This is different to being non-verbal, we were told, because Murray had words – he had plenty to say – he just couldn’t get them out. It was a cruel irony that his father,Murray Bruce, who is non-speaking, wanted his film to share his deep thoughts about his autism

In Flo’s film, she read a letter to her mother explaining her reasons for keeping her true self hidden, alongside footage of her rocking and staring into space – behaviour that she never expected to share with her mum, never mind the rest of the world. Their teary, happy reunion after her mother had watched it was a heart-rending relief.
